Not because it's particularly amazing food, or the menu is different or vast, or that there is anything else way super special about it. I find that it's just pretty good, the prices are decent (for Japanese food), and its an enjoyable place to eat for any casual occasion; bumming round, lunch with friends, no other ideas on where to eat...
The 1Utama outlet is perpetually packed; there is always a line (so I've never tried there). I've once been to the Sunway Pyramid restaurant and I wasn't overly impressed. But I've since been a few times to the new Fahrenheit88 store and enjoyed it. I was lucky that when I went it was full but I didn't have to line up, and the service was consistent and fast.
For some reason I usually like going to Japanese restaurants, even though I never know what to order (since I don't like seafood, specially those creepy and raw seafoods which Japanese cuisine is famous for). Yea, so I don't even eat sushi and I still choose to eat at a place called Sushi Zanmai (i'm weird). A lot of the time I order something pretty similar, some chicken or beef rice. Oh, and of course you cant forget the classic and delicious Gyoza!
So here were the Gyoza we ordered, pretty much the same as every other Gyoza i've ever eaten (delicious).
Gyoza - RM9.80
Like most Japanese restaurants, Sushi Zanmai also has bottomless hot and cold green tea. I decided to try something different for my beverage; Calpis Smoothie. It was really nice, creamy and tangy, the flavor a bit like vanilla ice cream. I don't think it was blended or mixed with anything, despite the name smoothie.
Calpis Smoothie - RM8.80
I don't know what the Ebidon was like, coz prawns are weird, but it appeared to be 5 or 6 tempura prawns cooked with undercooked egg omelet. Runny egg is also weird and tastes gross to me, but Malaysians seem to love it.
Ebidon (large) - RM15.80
Typically, I ordered Yakiniku Don (sliced beef with rice). I've had both the small and large sized serves of this at Sushi Zanmai, and there is barely any difference! The first time I ordered large, I actually asked the waiter if this is really large. Since the price difference is almost double, I would expect twice as much. This time I ordered small, and it seemed about only 15% smaller than the large! You are better off ordering two small serves, or a small and try something else of the same price!
Yakiniku Don - (pictured) Small RM10.80, Large RM19.80
The beef isn't tough and chewy, and the flavor is nice (enough for me to order it every single time). But I'd like it if the saucy stuff had more flavor so my rice doesn't feel left out (being plain and all). Oh yea, the sauteed onions are nice.
Ok ok... what would Sushi Zanmai be without sushi! This is some plain egg and rice sushi (name unknown), apparently it is nice, and it's cheap (less than RM2). They remind me of tongues... in a cute and funny way (not a disturbing way)!
